Volunteer Opportunities

Short term or long term volunteer opportunities

Tree PlantingThe Monday Creek Restoration Project frequently hosts special events or hands-on watershed restoration projects. Yet no matter how special a project is, it cannot be successful without volunteers to implement the program and see that it reaches its goals.

There are several hands-on watershed monitoring projects needing volunteers, including water quality testing and macroinvertebrate sampling. There is also a need for volunteers to staff various history museums and exhibits at county fairs.

Additional volunteer opportunities are also frequently available, and can involve special events planning, such as the Annual Monday Creek Watershed Tour, treeplantings, and streambank stabilization projects.

Updates regarding volunteer opportunities will be regularly posted to this site, ornoted in MCRP's newsletter. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact us!

What is AmeriCorps*VISTA?

AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program for individuals age 18 and older, AmeriCorps*VISTA Members are service entrepreneurs-catalysts for getting things done. With Rural Action, they increase housing opportunities, work with local farmers to increase local marketing opportunities, develop environmental education and restoration programs, mobilize community groups to address their assets, link volunteers to service projects, and increase the capacity of the organization through membership development and media projects. Members with Rural Action serve in low-income, rural communities of southeastern Ohio, helping residents improve their lives and their communities. AmeriCorps*VISTAs work full time, with a minimum commitment of one year.

How do VISTAs pay the bills?

AmeriCorps*VISTA Members live in the low-income communities in which they serve and receive a small living allowance to cover room, board, and other expenses.

What Benefits do VISTAs receive?

In addition to the living allowance, AmeriCorps*VISTAs earn an education award .

Stafford and Perkins student loans may be deferred during AmeriCorps*VISTA service. Those who elect to receive the post-service cash award in lieu of the education award may also qualify for partial cancellation of certain qualified student loans. Members receive health coverage at no cost and have access to non-competitive hiring in the federal civil service after completing a full AmeriCorps*VISTA year.

How do I apply to be an AmeriCorps*VISTA Member?

AmeriCorps*VISTA Members are selected through a review process involving an initial screening of the application, an interview, and a review of references. For people interested in becoming an AmeriCorps*VISTA with MCRP through Rural Action, Rural Action and MCRP staff members screen the applicants and send the necessary paperwork to the VISTA office in Columbus, Ohio.
